This is an antique runner rug from the Caucasus region with a rare and beautiful color composition.
Of all the rugs of the oriental world, it is the work of the Caucasian weavers that has been most revered since ancient times. The superlative wool of these weaves was said to have inspired Jason to seek the Golden Fleece within the Caucasus, his destination Colchis in Georgia, where a special type of merino sheep was found that produced a superb coat. Collectors since that time have coveted the region’s rugs not only for the quality of the wool but also for the weaver’s creative deployment of bright and clear dyes, and the range of well-executed weaving techniques.
