In white statuary marble of strong, bold design, based on an Inigo Jones / William Kent design with well sculpted crisp mouldings and falling foliate drops. A good and handsome chimneypiece with austere grandeur and presence so typical of the English Palladian style, circa 1740s.
The moulded shelf breaking forward over the jambs with egg and dart and decorated cyma mouldings. The plain frieze inset with a panelled centre tablet framed with foliate moulding matching those on the shelf. The jambs in the form of double scrolled consoles with bead and reel, the volutes with well carved inverted hanging drops of acorn and oak leaves. The opening framed and decorated with egg and dart. The whole raised on foot blocks. With restorations.
